Safeguarding your personal information

Cyber-criminals have been sending the following BOGUS email:

Dear Account Holder,
This report applies to your online banking user password has been expired.

Create a new user password by following these steps:

  1. Log into your online banking by our secure link for Expired Password and entering the temporary password below.
    Your temporary password is: Kcxne3nCF3n3n
  2. You will then be prompted to change your password.

This temporary password will expire in 24 hours.

This is a FRAUDULANT email. Please do not click on the link. Cybercriminals called phishers send thousands of e-mails like this every day, trying to get access to computers or to personal information. Unfortunately, there are many ways cyber criminals can obtain email addresses.

What to do if you downloaded something from a link in a phishing email:

  • Delete anything you may have downloaded. Also scan your system using an anti-virus program from a respected security vendor, such as Trend Micro, McAfee, Symantec or Microsoft, to remove any viruses that may infect your computer. Several of these vendors also offer free online security tools.
  • Some downloads may contain malware which will require you to take stronger measures to dis-infect your system. You may want to seek help from a consultant or a systems repair firm.
  • Change your password(s)- particularly those involving financial information to prevent unauthorized users from logging into your accounts.

To protect yourself from fraudulent e-mails and Web sites, here's what you can do:

  • Be suspicious of any e-mail that asks for personal information, requires you to download anything or requests your authentication information to access your online account.
  • Do not click any links in a suspicious e-mail. Do not download any tools from an e-mail.
  • Please delete it from your inbox and your trash bin.
  • You will find more information about protecting yourself from phishing schemes on the FTC Web site at http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/edu/pubs/consumer/alerts/alt127.shtm.
  • In addition, Intuit publishes security alerts and resources at http://security.intuit.com/

We have shared information about the phishing attack with the appropriate law enforcement agencies and are working to identify the source and other recipients.
