The Winfield Community Food Pantry has served this area for over twenty-five years. Their mission is dedicated to assisting the people of Northern Cowley County who are in need of quality service, useable food items and a nurturing and caring atmosphere.
The Winfield Community Food Pantry is located in the basement of Grace United Methodist Church, at 320 College Street. Grace United Methodist Church offers their facilities free of charge to them. They are open every weekday morning from 8:30 – 11:00 a.m., staffed entirely by around 20 faithful volunteers from the community. In 2012, those volunteers’ contributed over 2,160 hours.
As part of the process, families who come to the pantry must provide proof of residency in the Winfield, Rock or Udall area. They must also be within certain income guidelines. Families are provided with staple food items and given vouchers to purchase the perishable items, such as fruit, vegetables, bread, milk and meat. They can only receive services six times per year. In 2012, they provided food for 7,143 people, and the need continues to rise. In 2013 they have served an additional 212 people compared to the number served last year at this same time.
Poverty continues to be a concern in Winfield and Cowley County. Last year, the Food Pantry assisted families with $111,970 in food and vouchers. The need continues, as evidenced with over 59% of the students in Winfield school district being eligible for free or reduced lunches.
The Winfield community has been very generous in their support of the Pantry. The Food Pantry depends on this community support whether it is from individuals, churches, clubs, United Way or service organizations. A number of food drives are sponsored throughout the year by schools, Boy Scouts, local businesses, postal employees and other groups.
The Winfield Community Food Pantry was selected for the award by the Community Cornerstone Award selection committee, which includes Betsy Drennan, Cindy Goertz, Larry Hahn, Mary Jarvis, Mildred Sherrard, and Leroy Wheeler. All are previous recipients of the Cornerstone Award. Volunteer groups are the cornerstones of healthy communities. They’re on your corner – the people next door. They’re in your corner – helping make our community stronger. The Community Cornerstone Award recognizes the time and effort of volunteers dedicated to serving people and enhancing the quality of life in Cowley County.
